Mackinac Experience

The Mackinac Bridge connects Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas and stretches an impressive five miles long, making it one of the longest suspension bridges in the Western Hemisphere.

Construction on the Mackinac Bridge began in 1954 and was completed in 1957 after decades of discussion and planning. Before the bridge existed, travelers relied on ferries to cross the straits, which could be delayed for hours — especially during harsh winter weather.

The bridge officially opened on November 1, 1957, and was designed by engineer David B. Steinman, who specialized in suspension bridges around the world.

The total cost to build the bridge was approximately $100 million — a massive investment at the time.
